A Specific Drug for a Specific Type of Cancer

 The most aggressive form of breast cancer is called HER-2 positive. Hearing that you have this particular cancer would normally leave you without much hope for survival. While survival rates for women with HER2-negative breast cancer is 90 percent, the survival rate for this more aggressive strain is much lower due to the risk of recurrence. Two years after the trial began, 65 percent of the T-DM1 group are still alive while only 47 percent of the control group are alive.

The Really Exciting Part comes with the Side Effects

As exciting as these numbers are, the really exciting part is related to the associated side effects. Traditional chemotherapy comes with severe side effects including hair loss, nausea and bone-numbing exhaustion. However, women using this treatment found it to be less toxic. The side effects are less severe, and they are able to enjoy a high quality of life while they are battling the cancer.

There are still some side effects with this medication. Minor liver damage is a concern, as well as blood-clotting factors. However, these are far more bearable than the acute nausea, organ damage and hair loss that normally comes with chemo treatments.

Insurance and Price Concerns

Still in clinical trials, the price for this medication has not yet been set by developer Genetech.
